A little bit about me and why I started this

Hello, I’m Neil DeKarske and welcome to my new website. This is something I have always wanted to do but never seemed to have the time or energy. I recently left my corporate job and now I can pursue my passion with more intention and effort.

Photography has always been an interest of mine. Since I was a kid, my friends and I would take pictures of each other doing things like jumping our bikes. I took photography in high school and this was my first experience in what photography was all about.

Later in life, as I spent more time traveling, I was inspired to take better pictures. The iPhone just wasn’t cutting it. Doing some research on modern digital photography opened my eyes to different styles and the many ways to convey a feeling through a picture.

My work is focused in these key areas:

Black and White Photography – The absence of color makes the viewer focus on the subject and lighting, whereas color can distract from these core elements of a photo. Black and white photos immediately give a sense of nostalgia or tradition, or may appear more formal.

Street Photography – This is a broad category where I also include architecture. My goal here is to create composition with a human element and the architecture. I think this provides a sense of scale with a more pleasing and dynamic image than having only one of the elements.

Landscape Photography – What I look for in landscapes are dramatic skies, leading lines contrast and bold subjects. I use techniques like compression to bring an object that is far away to appear to be close to an object in the foreground.
